Bento #49: Saved by Onigiri

From an empty lunch, that is.

Our fridge was way empty when We made this lunch.  But if there are two things that are always available in the Sneaky Kingdom, it's eggs and rice.   Here are two onigiri made with ebi furikake and hard-boiled egg mashed into very small bits mixed in.  By the way, egg white does not stick well to rice.  Just saying.  Next to the onigiri are grapes, several of which picked up the ebi flavoring.  Shrimpy grapes are not quite as nice as standard ones.

In the tier behind, there's carrot sticks and kiwi slices.  Yum; kiwi!  We do love different fruits for Our bentos.  And finally, in the lid, there's a slice of fruitcake which the Queen Mother sent Us.  Yum; fruitcake!  Though We do wish she'd convert to standard dried fruits instead of the lurid candied kind, which can make the bread too sugary.  Still, very sweet of her to send it so that it could be Our bento dessert!  It was good with tea.

Oh, and the knitted widget behind the lunch?  That is Our work hat.  You see, the air conditioning is kept so high in the building We work at that We often have to bundle up in winter clothes so as not to freeze.  This seems ludicrous to Us, and yet, there it is.  So that is a hat that would be appropriate for fall in Our Original Kingdom up north.  Here, where it is Sunny, We keep the hat in Our office for a/c resistance purposes.  Oh, and the staff often resorts to opening the windows and letting the 97-degree air from outside in, to try to warm the room up a little. We--by which We, the King, mean everyone who works there--is aware that this is stupid, and yet, we don't have access to thermostat controls.  So instead, lots of wasted energy.  If someone else would like to draw a  moral here, by all means, do it.

Bento #29: Some Stuff We Found in the Fridge

We were at T-24 for prelims when We packed this lunch.  Yes, this was the day before the written exam, and We had a thousand more pressing things to freak out about than lunch.  So this was definitely a "er, is there food here anywhere?" kind of lunch.  We suspect that Our fridge was also a bit on the empty side at this point, due to nonstop studying.

This is why this lunch is clearly not enough food for a lunch.  We suspect that, all told, there were about 250 calories here.  Maybe (remember the oil in the bear).  We know that this is not a lunch.  This is a large snack.  We do not suggest that anyone else bring this for lunch unless, as We did, you go home about three hours after eating it and eat another snack.

You can see what it is for yourself: spinach and tomato salad with vinegar and oil in the little bear; an apple, and a greek yogurt.  This yogurt also sucked.  Which is not to say it was bad, necessarily, but just that it tasted like slightly thickened regular yogurt.  We mean, it was probably 20 times better than that terrible nonfat 90 calorie yogurt the Queen (Our Mama! <3) eats for lunch, but We generally eat a tastier yogurt, so this particular yogurt was not so impressive.

Royal Decree:  All yogurt must have a minimum of 1% fat content.  2% is better.  More fat is at your own discretion.

Notes for figuring out the King's family, as royal lineages are often quite complex: We, Asher, are the King.  Our Mom prefers the title "Queen."  Our Grandma is the Queen Mother.  Our Dad is a knight, the Royal Man-at-Arms, Captain of the Royal Guard, etc. unless the Queen is irritated with him, at which point he is the Royal Concubine, a role he plays well and with humor.

Bento #19: Salad time!

We are sorry for the blurry photo.  We thought Our camera was on Macro but it was not.  This is Our healthy, just-sort-of-thrown-together salad--the fridge was sort of low on salad ingredients, but We really wanted a big pile of fruit and veggie for lunch.  You can see that We have spinach, carrots, apples, an egg, and sunflower seeds in there.  The dressing is also a "Hm, so what is there?" dressing, because We did not want oil and vinegar.  The dressing was a mixture of spicy brown mustard, apple cider, rice vinegar, and pepper.  It was good, but very sweet--but We wanted sweet, because of the apple.  So kind of a weird fruity lunch.  It did the trick, though.

Bento #16: Sad, Empty Fridge lunch

When this lunch was consumed (last Friday), We had not been to the grocery store in some time.  Whoops.

Top tier: a piece of leftover Papa John's pizza, cut in two so it would fit in the box and a little jar of peanut sauce.  Bottom tier: red bell pepper and carrots to dip in the peanut sauce.  Under the lid: a Ginger-O and some apricots.

We do not have a photo of this in its natural environment (i.e.  the coffee shop where We ate it) because after the Borders incident, We were concerned about lunching in public.  No fear, though; we ate it at an environmentally-concerned, free-trade-only, nonprofit-after-bills-are-paid joint, and not only did the nice lady working not care about Our lunch, but because they were out of decaf when We went to get a refill to eat w/ Our lunch and We had to wait about a half an hour, she gave it to us for free.  Hooray!
